Classroom-based Research

The UNT Department of Biological Sciences has developed several new research-based lab courses which will help to build and foster a culture of undergraduate research at UNT by providing students more opportunities to participate in hands-on laboratory research. These courses were originally created as part of a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (2010-2015). Students who participate in the class will be provided with the opportunity to contribute to the research of a UNT faculty member in a course setting. UNT offers these upper level research-based laboratory courses in the Classroom Research Laboratory (CRL) on the second floor of the Life Sciences Complex.

CRL course are taught under the BIOL 3900 - Advanced Research in Life Sciences course number. Topics rotate each semester and have included:

Developmental Physiology - Dr. Ed Dzialowski

Advanced Bacteriophage Genetics - Dr. Lee Hughes

Advanced Research in Cell Biology, Biochemistry, and Molecular Biology - Dr. Kent Chapman

Environmental Toxicology - Dr. Aaron Roberts

Molecular-Genetics - Dr. Jyoti Shah

Please check the UNT Schedule of Classes prior to each semester for course topic availability. Unfortunately, the the Spring 2021 semester Bacteriophage Genetics (BIOL 3900.001) taught by Dr. Lee Hughes has been cancelled. The next BIOL 3900 course offering should be in Fall 2021 (information will be available by March, 2021).

A maximum of 16 students will be able to enroll in these courses each semester, so application and approval is necessary to register for these classes.

Who should apply?

  • Any Junior or Senior Biology or Biochemistry major who has completed the required course prerequisites (see individual course application) and who is interested in gaining research experience.
  • Research does not always fit neatly into 6 hour per week class schedules, so applicants should be willing to come in outside of regular lab meeting times when necessary.
